An estranged wife of a Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) employee
together with her relatives have been arrested for conspiring to kill
her former husband.
Buruburu Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Jeremiah
Ikiao on Thursday said that Ms Bilha Njoki had hired hit men to kill her
former husband but police got the information and laid a trap.On Wednesday, they tricked her that he had been killed and the body dumped in Dandora.
Ms Njoki instead sent her brother Peter Gakungi and a friend Jimmy Waititu to Mowlem to confirm that the man, Mr Joseph Muraya, had actually been killed.
Undercover detectives who acted as the hit men had taken Mr Muraya to the scene and covered his body with blood.
When the two arrived and saw the ‘body’ they celebrated and called Ms Njoki to inform her that they had actually confirmed that he was dead.
The officers arrested them and confiscated their phones before ordering them to take them to where Ms Njoki was.
Police had gathered adequate evidence before the arrest. The police informer had been told to meet the planners at a restaurant along Manyanja road that had a CCTV camera and had also been given a recorder.
They also had the call records and had established that Ms Njoki had bought a new phone and line for the planning of the execution of her former husband.
Ms Njoki was arrested near Mama Lucy Hospital while inside a black Toyota Harrier together with her sister Ms Lucy Mwangi. The detectives recovered Sh400, 000 and six mobile phones.
In his statement to the police, Mr Muraya, a resident of Buruburu phase 5, said that he married Ms Njoki in 2007 and had two children. However, they separated early last year and he has been staying with the children.
“The car they were driving was full of different assortments of alcohol which I guess they were for them to celebrate my death,” added Mr Muraya told Nairobi Today on Thursday in an interview.
Buruburu DCI Mr Ikiao said that his officers had worked closely with Mr Muraya to gather enough evidence about the plan and also to trap the hit men while at the same time ensuring that he was safe.
“I think she is after our property and business which we still co-own together, because after I’m gone she can keep everything,” a fearful Muraya said in the interview.
Police said the intended killing could be due to properties and businesses the two still owned together. Among the properties owned by the estranged couple are a house in Buruburu and a mobile phone shop along Luthuli Avenue.
The suspects are expected in court today to be charged with conspiring to commit murder.
